Profile

Having an in depth knowledge of the inspection process, Paul is able to communicate with clarity and accuracy all findings and ensures that schools are fully informed of all findings.

Paul collects accurate information on schools through robust practices and strategies through his school improvement work. He supports schools to carry out reviews based on the evidence from deep dives in of the curriculum, SEND and early years. Working closely with all staff and leaders, strengths and weaknesses are identified and information is used to both challenge and support leaders to make clear impactful changes.

Further visits to the school through full reviews, audits and follow ups enable Paul to ‘RAG’ rate and discuss the impact in partnership with leaders and set next steps based on the wealth of evidence included. This enables leaders to develop SIPs and SEFs that are based on sound evidence and consider all elements to enhance their educational offer. The work he has done has enabled him to carry out performance management of senior leaders linked closely to the priorities identified and how impact will be routinely monitored.

Having an indepth understanding of the inspection system, this has enabled Paul to carry out impactful deep dives in all curriculum subjects, carry out reviews of Pupil Premium, work with senior leaders to monitor the impact of their school improvement priorities, carry out safeguarding checks and check how planning has been considered to impact on vulnerable learners.

Paul's work as a school leader and more recently school improvement advisor, enables him to coach others and model best practice to others. He currently works as the lead trainer for SEND across DDAT for all SENCOs and TAs. This enables him to support the priorities of the trust and school leaders and include all staff in the journey. As a result of his work with not only SENCOs and TAs, he has helped them to develop their confidence to take well considered risks to challenge them to improve standards for all pupils. They generally like to pick up the phone or Zoom/ Teams to discuss the ideas that they have based on the CPD, current research and information that he has shared with them to empower them to carry out their role. This in turn has led to high quality first teaching across the DDAT schools and to SEND being a platinum focus for all schools when they consider their curriculum offer and how this will be adapted to meet the needs of all pupils.

His ability to work as part of a team as well as a leader has had real impact on the education provided for pupils in a range of contexts. During his work as principal of Wyndham Primary Academy in Derby city, his passion and team focus was noted through a range of accreditations and accolades that they acquired. This led to the school becoming one of the first primary ‘World Class Quality Mark’ schools in the UK and also to achieving TES English Team of the year as well as national runners up in the Maths Team of the Year. Paul's current work has been identified by DSAT (Diocese of Sheffield Trust) who would like to him to work as a member of their improvement team also.

Paul has a broad range of knowledge through the work that he has done. As mentioned, he has a passion for SEND but he has increasingly been required to support schools with behaviour support and advice when they have been setting up their own nurture/ alternative provision style provision due the ever-changing needs of the pupils that are attending mainstream schools. Schools have subsequently become more forward thinking and creative in the ways that they support pupils and how their offer can enable all pupils to access learning. This work has been seen across a range of schools in the DDAT Trust and will form the basis of his work with DSAT. Paul also works with schools on early years and how they can impact on pupils’ development at an early stage. He has a comprehensive understanding of the early years and Ofsted framework to reinforce this.

During Paul's time in schools, he has worked as a Designated Safeguarding Leader where he has implemented robust systems to enable pupils to keep children safe. This led to the local authority in Nottinghamshire asking him to represent the safeguarding board to review the practices of the authority and of the schools that they are supporting. This has led Paul to carry out full audits for schools to enable them to ensure they create a culture of safeguarding.
