Sally Hamson
I gained my first headship in 2007, not long after achieving my NPQH. I remained as the Head at Wollaston Primary School for 14 years where I led the school into an Ofsted ‘Good’ grade, and we remained ‘Good’ throughout.

Profile

During this time, I realised a passion - developing staff to be the best that they could. Working with 4 Deputy Heads, I helped them achieve their first headship, where they remain as successful heads to this day. I became a Professional Partner working with the NCSL and a few years after I became an LLE. Having been commissioned by the LA to support a few local schools that were struggling, I realised this was a role which I thoroughly enjoyed as I was able to support and develop senior leaders and headteachers.

In September 2018 I became the Director of School Improvement for a local trust. My role here was to support the schools, working alongside Head Teachers to drive up standards. I was responsible for all the CPD that these schools undertook and personally created and led my own programme - Teacher Improvement. This programme included training everyone from post 16 into potential teaching careers, through middle leadership to Headteacher development and finally into Executive leadership.

I left the trust in November 2021 and took on a temporary position with Milton Keynes Council as a School Improvement Partner. My role here was to support and challenge a selection of schools, ranging from LA controlled schools to Academies. Through targeted analysis, I was able to support and work with the leadership teams to identify and develop strategies to drive improvement. I also led Governor training and supported schools in their preparation for Ofsted.

I now work for Coventry University as an Associate Lecturer on the Master’s degree in School Leadership. I support students through group tutorials, one to one coaching support, marking their assignments and their final dissertations. The majority of these students are also completing their level 7 apprenticeship, which can be an enormous challenge, as they have the added pressure of combining their Masters, their apprenticeship and teaching full time in their relative schools. I simply adore this role; It has enabled me to refuel my passion for education through developing senior leaders in schools to become head teachers.

Another role I currently have is working for the Best Practice Network as a Leadership Performance Coach and Facilitator. Through this I have the wonderful opportunity to support leaders through their NPQH or NPQSL qualification. I meet with them as groups and on a 1-2-1 basis, marking their written activities and coaching them when and where they require it.

These two roles, working with Best Practice and with Coventry University have enabled me to fulfil an educational passion of mine - developing middle leaders and senior leaders into headship and supporting new headteachers as they grapple with the challenging role and ultimately be the best that they can be. I felt passionate about this role while working in the trust, and I am now able to immerse myself completely.
