Course Overview

This course is designed for subject leaders and class teachers to develop their understanding of how the best principles of cognitive science can be easily applied in the classroom and across the curriculum to maximise the impact of your teaching.

School Impact

During the session, you will understand how the brain develops, how children learn most effectively and how you can teach so that children don’t forget and can easily retrieve and use key concepts and knowledge. This course will save you valuable time as you will come away with a wealth of ideas, strategies and resources to implement immediately in the classroom and in your subject area. During the session, you will be coached by an ECM adviser to audit your current practice and to identify key next steps to support you in moving forward, using ECM materials. This course is extremely useful as a stand-alone course; it also perfectly complements our other course on memory, which is for senior leaders and curriculum leaders.

By the end of this session, you will:

• Understand how to apply cognitive science effectively both within the classroom and as a subject leader.

• Understand the importance of developing a strong learning climate and culture within your classroom or subject area, engaging children in learning, building, and consolidating knowledge.

• Consider how the brain develops in childhood and strategies that aid information transfer.

• Learn about the learning and memory process, schema construction, and automation.

• Build knowledge of cognitive load theory and practical ways to maximise memory capacity and avoid unhelpful cognitive overload.

• Consolidate learning – teaching so pupils don’t forget.

• Leave with a set of strategies and a bank of resources to implement immediately in your classroom or within your subject area.

• Undertake a self-evaluation of your current practice, identifying next steps and developing a succinct work plan to support you in moving forward.
