Teaching coping and social skills through Primary Schools
The Partnership for Children has produced programmes for schools that teach children skills for life: how to cope with everyday difficulties, how to communicate with and get on with other people, and build self-awareness and emotional resilience. The programmes are suitable for all children, and are evidence-based. They are widely used both in the UK and in over 30 countries around the world.
The programmes meet all elements of the Mental Wellbeing requirements of the statutory guidance for Relationships and Health Education for primary schools in England and support many other key requirements.
The programmes are based around stories, and the resources contain full lesson plans, posters, activity sheets and children’s items required to deliver the sessions. The modules cover:
· Change and loss
· Moving forward
Zippy’s Friends is a school based social emotional learning programme for 5-7 year olds.
Apple’s Friends is a school based social emotional learning programme for 7 – 9 year olds.
Passport is a school based social emotional learning programme for 9 – 11 year olds.
Children develop their own positive strategies to deal with problems through engaging activities: listening to stories, discussion, games, role-play and drawing.
These programmes have been evaluated through randomized control trials in a variety of cultures. Trials have shown statistically significant improvements in coping and social skills for children taking part in the programmes, as compared to control groups. Other findings included: increased emotional literacy, improved class climate, a reduction in bullying, and improved academic performance. Teachers report consistently positive views of the programmes, with some being surprised at how freely children will discuss their feelings and problems and come up with positive strategies to deal with them.
The programmes are stand-alone but work well being delivered as a suite across the whole school.
ECM is offering several dates for the training of teachers to run the programmes in their schools and purchase programme materials, including lesson plans in order to deliver the programmes. Each staff member who wishes to deliver the programme(s) will need to attend the training. You do not need to attend all 3 sessions even if you will be delivering more than one programme, choose one live programme training to attend and you will be sent short training videos for the other programmes.
Please note you will also need to purchase the resources to run the programmes
Full teaching and children sets costs: Zippy’s Friends £325 + PP, Apple’s Friends £250 + PP, Passport £325+ PP
Or these can be purchased as online access to materials, currently £160 or buy all 3 for £450
